  1. Keeping an eye on Hurricane Irene. Still lots of time for it to change course, but it’s currently tracking dead on to Pine Knoll Shores / Morehead City. You can keep track via the National Hurricane Center’s website: http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/

Let’s all hope it stays far East and misses land.

You can also view current webcam of the beach (during daylight hours) at one of our favorite restaurant’s webcam: http://www.crabsclaw.com/webcam.html

  2. Latest update on Hurricane Irene shows a continued push East. While this is good news, our Coast is not out of danger. Even if this storm passes East of Cape Lookout as now predicted, our Coast will sustain high winds with a potential repeat of the damages from sound side flooding as witnessed by Hurricane Ophila back in 2005. And that is assuming the storm tracks to the computer models. One never knows.

No news yet from Caterett County officials on the evacuation of the island.

  3. Carteret County has declared a State of Emergency announced its evacuation plans for Thursday due to Hurricane Irene. There is a mandatory evacuation starting at 1 p.m. Thursday for all visitors and non-residents county-wide.

Voluntary evacuations are in place for low-lying areas, or for fragile/sick people and mobile homeowners.

Bogue Banks has issued a mandatory evacuation starting at 6 a.m. Friday through 8 p.m. Friday.
